CMS Scientific Council Meets in Bonn to Set Course for CMS COP11

Bonn, 1 July 2014 - The 18th Meeting of the Scientific Council to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) is meeting 1-3 July 2014 at the United Nations Premises in Bonn, Germany.  The meeting brings together more than 80 experts from 50 countries including appointed experts covering specific threats, taxa, geographic regions or particular areas of interest to the Convention.

The Scientific Council provides scientific advice and makes recommendations to the CMS Conference of the Parties (COP) on the latest research, conservation and management measures relating to migratory species covered by the Convention. This includes providing advice on the inclusion of new species in the Appendices and the designation of species for Concerted or Cooperative Actions under the Convention.

Over the course of the three day meeting, the Scientific Council will focus on the following main issues:

  • Strategic Plan for Migratory Species 2015-2023 which will be submitted to COP11 for adoption  
  • Draft review and guidelines on the impact of renewable energy technology on migratory species including a draft resolution to be reviewed and submitted to COP11
  • Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI) including the draft Resolution and the draft Argali Action Plan to be reviewed and submitted to the COP
  • Management of marine debris based on the recommendations of three reviews to be discussed
  • Draft resolutions on sustainable boat-based wildlife watching tourism with regard to aquatic mammals and on migratory sharks will be introduced
  • Impact of invasive alien species on animals listed under CMS
  • Individual listing proposals submitted to COP11for the amendment of CMS Appendices including the Polar Bear, African Lion as well as shark and ray species
  • Draft Saker Falcon Global Action Plan and associated draft resolution
  • Draft Single Species Action Plan for the Conservation of the Loggerhead Turtle in the South Pacific Ocean will be reviewed and submitted to COP11
  • Review of African-Eurasian Migratory Landbirds Action Plan
  • Minimizing the risk of bird poisoning and addressing illegal killing of migratory birds
  • New structure of the Scientific Council and election of the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Scientific Council for the period 2015-2017
