The 8th Meeting of the Parties to the Agreement on the Conservation of Small Cetaceans in the Baltic, North East Atlantic, Irish and North Seas (ASCOBANS) will take place 30 August to 1 September 2016 in Helsinki, Finland.
At the meeting, along with discussions surrounding strategic and institutional subjects, ASCOBANS Parties will consider species action plans and resolutions on current conservation challenges. These include ocean energy, pollution from Polychlorinated Biphenyls, unexploded underwater munitions, anthropogenic noise, and bycatch.
Many of these same dangers threaten species the world over, in every ocean. Bycatch, for example, is the number one killer of sea life worldwide. By addressing such global threats, concerted action agreed by ASCOBANS Parties at the meeting could not only reduce their impacts on species in the ASCOBANS area but also help raise awareness and contribute to a global response needed to tackle these pressing issues affecting all life in our oceans.
